Obituary

William "Bill" Marshall of Los Altos, CA passed away on December 16, 2023 after a short illness; he was 92 years young.

Bill was born November 30, 1931 in Syracuse, New York to Ruth Hall and William Marshall and though he grew up in Orlando, Florida, he considered the area around Port Byron New York home, spending summers there with his aunts, uncles and cousins.

A constant academic, he attended the University of Rochester, New York on a full tuition scholarship to study Chemistry. After his third year as an undergraduate, he was accepted to medical school at the University of Rochester, and was again awarded a full tuition scholarship. After completing medical school and an internship at the University Hospitals of Cleveland Ohio, Bill served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy Medical Corps, allowing him to travel the world, particularly on the USS Ranger.

After completing his naval service, Bill began his residency at Stanford University and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Radiology.  He joined the medical school faculty of Stanford University in the diagnostic radiology department and was instrumental in establishing the neuroradiology section at Stanford, which he served as chief for 17 years. In 1984 he served as President of the Western Neuroradiological Society.  In 1967 he took a 4 month unpaid leave from Stanford to serve in the Volunteer Physicians for Vietnam Program, as a surgeon in a Vietnamese civilian hospital and also taught radiology techniques to many physicians and medical students in the DaNang region of Vietnam.

Bill was thankful for the colleagues he worked with at Stanford and was instrumental in getting the first CT Scan, and MRI machines there. During his career he was able to practice and lecture all over the world from Sweden to South Africa. He built life-long friendships with those he worked beside.  He retired from Stanford in 1993 after 30 years.

A lover of life, Bill was an adventurer.  In his younger days he was an avid motorcycle rider, with a particular need for speed and adrenaline, he reluctantly gave them up in his mid 70s. A lifelong skiing enthusiast, he relished his free lift ticket snow skiing when he turned 80. He was a water ski jumper in his youth and continued to be able to slalom ski into his 80s.  He loved playing racquetball, and met many friends on the courts at Stanford.  Bill greatly appreciated the beauty and wonderment of the United States, whether visiting the National Parks or traveling the backroads of Eagle Lake region in Northern California.  He also loved his extended family, particularly his family in New York.  Summers were often spent traveling to New York for family reunions and he loved showing family around California, especially Stanford.

Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jane, and their children Herb (Lorraine) Marshall and Jenny (Simon) Hathaway, along with 5 grandchildren Adelaide, Josephine, and Broderick Marshall and Jack and Cecilia Hathaway.  He is also survived by his sister Mary Pitts and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Ruth Wilck of Lyons, NY.

A memorial will be held in Los Altos in March, with burial in Port Byron, New York.

Donations can be made in Bill's honor to the Bay Area Ridge Trail or the American Cancer Society .
