Sylvester Thomas Barton, known to his friends as S.T., Tommy and Tom, passed peacefully and comfortably on November 15, 2022, with his three daughters by his side. Born to Sylvester Thomas Barton Sr., and Helen Mary (Cowdrey) Barton Kirk on February 23, 1929, in Reed, Oklahoma. Tom came to California with his family during the Great Depression and adopted the beautiful Santa Clara Valley as his lifelong home.

Tom is survived by his brother Kenneth Barton and Ken's three children. He is survived by his loving children, Michael Barton (Allison), Alice Carmack, Doug Barton, Jennifer Barton, and Cheryle Gail. He was cherished by his grandchildren Heather Barton-Mitchell (Stephen); Seth Barton (Jessica); Jeremy, Jake (Farhana) and Kate Carmack; Jonathan Barton (Jennifer); Keith Barton; Anita Wood (Bill); Brittany Nickel (Robert); Joanie Adamson; and Jessica Wilson (Alan Korgav). His legacy will continue through his great-grandchildren Jesse, Mason, Elijah, Joshua, John, Kasen, Mark, Kelsea, Kyle, Eli, Emily, Jayden, Easton, Avery, Will, Jordan, Tanner and Taylor. He is preceded in death by his mother, Helen Mary (Cowdrey) Barton Kirk; father Sylvester Thomas Barton, Sr, brother Carrol Eugene Barton, and his loving wife of 62 years, Marguerite Hope (Weeks) Barton.

Tom married the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Marguerite Hope Weeks, in 1948. They went on to build and have a full and busy life together in Cupertino, Los Altos and Mountain View, California, raising five children and enjoying their 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Tom used his carpentry skills to help build the Church of Christ on Blaney Avenue; Tom and Marguerite were life-long members of various congregations of the Church of Christ. They loved traveling together with their adult children and grandchildren throughout the United States and the world. An avid sailor, Tom once sailed from Costa Rica to California and from Fiji to Hawaii. He and Marguerite enjoyed two trips to the Holy Land, a long visit to the Philippine Islands, and loved exploring both New Zealand islands. Tom served his country in the California National Guards, Company H, 159 th Infantry as a Machine Gunner and certified Marksman.

Tom graduated from San Jose Technical High School and went to work as a carpenter, building homes for families throughout the Bay Area. A life-long learner, he went on to study for and get his Real Estate License, Contractors License, Brokers License, and small aircraft Pilot's license. He opened Tom Barton Builder in the 1970's, designing and building custom homes throughout the Los Altos hills, San Francisco Peninsula and later, Tom Barton Real Estate Company.

Tom and his life were celebrated 2 ½ years ago on his 90 th Birthday at a fun-filled and loving party. He enjoyed seeing the more than 80 friends and family who attended, receiving birthday greetings from friends far and near, as well as letters of congratulations from California Governor Newsom and members of the California State Legislature. No funeral or memorial service is planned but Tom would love for you to consider donating to a cause that is close to your heart, or to go outside and plant some tomato plants or fruit trees or enjoy a beautiful sailing date on the San Francisco Bay and think of him as forever captaining the boat tiller, his face to the wind.
