Obituary

In Loving Memory of Mrs. Sabita Goswami

Mrs. Sabita Goswami was born on September 30, 1931, in Salkocha, Assam, India. She was the 2nd eldest of four siblings. She passed away peacefully in San Jose, California, on May 26, 2025. She is survived by her son and granddaughter.

Born into a distinguished family, her father, Aghore Nath Bhattacharjee, served as a district commissioner, which led the family to live in various parts of Assam, including Guwahati. Eventually, they settled in Shillong, the then capital of Assam. In 1958, Sabita married Debabrata Goswami. A year later, she traveled to Manchester, England, to join her husband, who was pursuing an M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. During her time in England, she worked briefly at a football stadium as a betting ticket verifier.

In 1961, the couple returned to India by sea, a journey they chose deliberately for the experience. Her husband went on to become a professor at Assam Engineering College, where he later retired as Principal in 1987. They had two children. Tragically, their younger child, Punyabrata,  was struck by a truck on the roadside in 1975—a loss that devastated the family.

Following her husband's retirement in 1987, the family moved into his ancestral home on S.C. Goswami Road in Panbazar. After his passing in 1990, Sabita moved to Gandhibasti and later immigrated to the United States in 2005.

Sabita led a rich and thoughtful life. She had a passion for knitting, gardening, reading, and cooking. She remained intellectually curious and deeply engaged with world affairs, keeping up with current events through newspapers like WSJ and television news. Even as her eyesight and mobility declined, she continued to cook until she became bedridden about a year before her passing.

Sabita was known for her generous spirit and philanthropic nature. She offered quiet support to many and contributed to various causes. One of her most significant acts of generosity was the donation of the family's ancestral home in Panbazar—alongside her sister-in-law—to the Vivekananda Kendra. Today, that location serves as the organization's Northeast regional headquarters.

Her life was marked by resilience, compassion, and grace. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
