Obituary of Robert R. Hoskins

Robert "Bob" Hoskins, 90, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2011. Bob was preceded in death by his darling wife, Gertrude "Peg" Hoskins; she greeted him in Heaven one day after their 67th Wedding Anniversary. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Ann Hoskins, from Columbus, Ohio. Bob was born in Conneaut, Ohio. At the age of 18, he joined the United States Army and secured a position in the 387th Army Service Force Band as a drummer, serving during WWII. His time in the Army lead him across the country to San Francisco where he met and married Peg; it was then that California became his home. Bob leaves behind three children, Richard, John, and Mary (Ritter) Hoskins. He has four grandsons, Thomas, Patrick, Daniel, and Tyler Hoskins. He has five great grandchildren, Thomas Jr., Isabella, Vincent (Thomas), Samuel, and Anastasia Rose (Daniel). He retired after 38 years of service to Pacific Telephone and Telegraph and loved all things "telephone" related. He is a past President of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Sierra Pacific Chapter #71. His passion was playing the drums, music, and all thing Jazz & Dixieland. He played locally with many Dixieland bands and was a member of the San Francisco Musicians Union for 52 years. His love of life was infectious and he will truly be missed by all his family and friends. We will so miss the Leader of the Band. Rosary service and viewing will be held at Spangler Mortuary, 174 N. Sunnyvale Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA, (408) 736-6294, on Friday, October 28th, at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, October 29th, at 10:00 AM at Saint Lawrence the Martyr Church, 1971 Saint Lawrence Drive, Santa Clara, CA, (408) 296-3000. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Telephone Pioneers of America at http://www.telecompioneers.org, 800-976-1914, an organization of which Bob was an active member and advocate.
