Raymond Lee Pekary, son of Raymond Henry Pekary and Thelma Yeager Pekary, passed away peacefully at his home in Mountain View, CA on August 21, 2023. He was 82 years old. A native of Santa Monica, CA, he was an Eagle Scout, winner of the 1955 CIF tennis championship, and member of Theta Chi at UCLA prior to receiving a congressional appointment to the United States Naval Academy. He was #1 on Navy's Varsity Tennis and Squash Teams, #4 in Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis, and #7 nationally All American Squash. As a member of the Naval Academy Sports Hall of Fame he won the USS Barb Trophy in 1962 and 1963, and the Maryland State Squash Championship in 1963. He graduated with his Class in 1963 as a member of the 21st Company.
Upon graduation Lee attended Nuclear Power School in Bainbridge and Submarine School in Groton, CT. He served on the USS Sea Cat (SS-399), the USS Tirante (SS-420), and as Project Officer at the Naval Ordnance Unit in Key West, FL. He resigned as a Lieutenant in 1969, earned his MBA at Stanford University, and pursued a career in accounting as Division Controller of HP's CSD, and Corporate Controller at Lexel Laser, Netmanage, and Cordys Software. Lee served as PTA President, Boy Scout Leader, AYSO Soccer referee and coach, Habitat for Humanity volunteer, Project Leader for Christmas in April, and HP's Division Manager for United Way. Lee enjoyed family vacations and was an enthusiastic supporter of his sons' and grandchildren's activities and sports.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Patricia Worthington Strauss of Catonsville, MD, sons Shannon (April) and Christopher (Debbie); grandchildren Isaiah (Karriyma), Josiah (Mackenzie), Alaina, Benjamin, Connor, Ruben (Summer), Abby, Anthony, Agustin, Gabriel, and 5 great-grandchildren. Internment will be at the United States Naval Academy Columbarium.
