Philip John
Bergh
August 28, 1940 – June 19, 2025
Phil was born August 28, 1940, to Antoinette (Toni) Smith Bergh and Alton (Al) Bergh in Winona, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Paul. He is survived by his wife, Diane Goddard Bergh, and by his sisters, Marie (Bergh) Lyons and Judy Bergh, as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family. Phil died in Los Altos, California, June 19, 2025 after a battle with cancer.
Phil grew up in St. Charles, Minnesota, graduated from St. Charles High School in 1958, then went on to graduate from Rochester Community College in Rochester, Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. After graduation from college in 1963, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country. Phil and Diane were married in 1971 at Air Force Chapel One, Homestead Air Force Base, Florida, when Phil was stationed at the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and meteorologist in the Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) after proudly serving at various sites in the continental United States, including Alaska, and in Guam. After retiring from the Air Force, he entered a career in civilian life working as a satellite programmer in the United States government and private industry.
Phil and his wife Diane lived for many years in California, where he developed a strong interest in studying genealogy and in raising colorful, fragrant roses on his patio. He was an avid supporter of his local National Public Radio station, and the family suggests that memorial tributes be made to NPR or any local public radio station.
A graveside service with full military honors was held at Skylawn Cemetery in Half Moon Bay, California, at 10:00 AM on June 25, 2025.
