Obituary

Dr. Philip G. Armi, DDS, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, at the age of 97. A beloved resident of Los Altos Hills, California since 1965, he lived a long life marked by devotion to family, service to country, and dedication to his profession.

Born on September 27, 1928, to Frank and Angelina Armi (née Comi), who preceded him in death, Philip grew up in Hanford, California. He graduated from Hanford High School in 1946, where the caption beneath his senior photograph described his "silver tongue and carefree smile" as his greatest assets. While those qualities certainly carried him far in life, it was his determination, integrity, and remarkable work ethic that truly defined his character and legacy. During high school, he participated in ROTC, beginning a lifelong commitment to service.

After graduation, Dr. Armi attended San Jose State University before earning his dental degree from Northwestern University School of Dentistry in 1954. That same year, he began his service in the United States Air Force, proudly attaining the rank of Captain. From 1954 to 1956, he was stationed at Misawa Air Force Base in Japan, fulfilling his commitment to his country with honor.

In 1952, he married the love of his life, Merlynne Armi (née Smith). Together they shared 67 devoted years of marriage until her passing in 2019. Following his discharge from active duty, Philip and Merlynne returned to California, where he opened his dental practice—first in Santa Clara and later, in 1957, in Mountain View.

A lifelong learner and compassionate practitioner, Dr. Armi was deeply committed to his patients and to advancing the field of dentistry. He served as president of the California Society of Dentistry for Children and was the longest-serving Trustee of the California Dental Association, a role he considered invaluable in helping to shape and strengthen the practice of dentistry in California. In recognition of his professional excellence and
leadership, he was inducted into The American College of Dentistry and The Pierre Fauchard Academy. Known for his diplomacy, steady judgment, and ability to navigate complex and sometimes difficult negotiations, he earned the respect of colleagues throughout the profession. Just as importantly, he was beloved by his patients, who trusted him deeply and knew they would always receive the highest standard of care delivered with kindness and integrity. He retired from practice in 2001 after more than four decades of dedicated service.

Dr. Armi was also deeply involved in his community. He joined the Mountain View Rotary Club in 1977 and remained an active and enthusiastic member for many years. During his time with Rotary, he served as club president and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his service. Known for his enthusiasm and camaraderie, he was a longtime songmaster who delighted members with his leadership of Rotary songs and traditions. He frequently helped organize the club's annual golf tournament and was especially famous among fellow Rotarians for his barbecuing skills at the club's annual picnic.

Dr. Armi was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Beverly Woodfint and Joetta Bennett, and his brothers, Frank Armi, Jr., and Monte Armi. He carried with him a lifetime of cherished memories of their shared childhood and enduring family bonds.

He is survived by his daughters, Lynette Miesen (Thomas) of Niceville, Florida, and Jody Krazeise (Fred) of Milton, Delaware; his son, Gregory Armi (Carolyn) of Los Altos Hills, California; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. To his family, he was more than a respected professional—he was a devoted father and grandfather who never lost his sense of humor and always made time for those he loved. Whether singing with his daughter Jody, duck hunting with his son Greg, or proudly supporting his daughter Lynette's artwork and poetry, he treasured time spent together. His legacy of kindness, service, resilience, leadership, laughter, and love lives on through them.

A memorial service and inurnment will be held at a later date at Floydsburg Cemetery in Crestwood, Kentucky, where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the California Waterfowl Association .
