Obituary

Patrick Stanton, beloved father, partner, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend passed away peacefully at his home in Palo Alto, CA on May 12, 2023 after a courageous battle with lymphoma.

Patrick began his life journey on May 2, 1969 in Lake Forest, Illinois as the son of Edward Stanton and Ann Fitzgerald (Heaphy) Stanton. He was the youngest of three children, including his adored brother, Ted Stanton, and beloved sister Kristen Stanton. With ambitious parents frequently moving the family around the US, Patrick was destined to be a world traveler.

Patrick grew up in Pelham Manor, New York and Houston, Texas, where he attended elementary and middle school. He wanted to branch out during his high school years and attended boarding school at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. At Choate, Patrick developed some of his most cherished friendships. He traveled the world with this close group of friends - no one made him laugh as much as the "Choaties". Patrick continued his education at the University of Colorado Boulder (Sko Buffs!), where he earned his degree in geography and spent his junior year abroad in Paris. Patrick always strived to succeed and worked hard to attend Columbia University's business school, where he earned his MBA.

It was at Columbia University in 1995, where Patrick met his future wife, Katie Jacobs Stanton. They bonded over their international backpacking adventures, love of dogs and whimsical pranks. After living together in New York City for two years, they married on a mountaintop in Telluride, Colorado, then moved to Northern California to pursue their careers and build a family.

In 2000 and 2002, Patrick earned his favorite role in life: dad. Patrick's greatest joy was being a father to his three treasured children, Ellie, Caleigh, and Declan (as well as four adorable and poorly-trained dogs, Chobe, Cheerio, Duke and Taco).

Patrick was a pillar of strength, guidance, and unconditional love for his family. He took great pride in watching his children pursue their dreams and flourish into remarkable individuals. He also loved traveling around the world with his family and living abroad in Paris and Bangalore. Patrick also cherished one-on-one time with each of his children: mountain biking with Ellie, listening to Declan play the guitar, and getting ice cream cones with Caleigh. A lover of music, he also took them to many concerts and loved when they turned him on to new bands.

In 2016, Patrick and Katie ended their marriage but remained best friends and trusted confidantes, sharing the most sacred role of raising their children together. That same year, Patrick pivoted his career as a successful business development leader (across Autoweb, Dealix, Denmark Digital Hub and Opower) to becoming a real estate entrepreneur, developing a property in Reno, Nevada.

It was in this next chapter of life that Patrick found love again with his wonderful and dedicated partner, Leslie Bender. Together, they enjoyed many impromptu adventures, long runs, inappropriate humor, and enduring love.

Patrick always found inspiration in nature. He reveled in the beauty of the world around him and advocated for its preservation. As a practicing Buddhist, Patrick approached his life with mindfulness, compassion, and a commitment to personal growth. He embraced the principles of interconnectedness and sought to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

In 2021, Patrick was diagnosed with an aggressive and rare cancer, double-hit non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This cancer proved challenging and ultimately led to his complete vision loss. Despite these challenges, Patrick's Buddhist faith helped him remain calm and hopeful and his indefatigable sense of humor, sassy jokes and kind disposition made him everyone's favorite patient. Further, Patrick and Leslie's dedication to one another was cemented during this battle and Leslie brought comfort, support, and joy.

In his final weeks, Patrick was surrounded by his closest friends and family who rushed to his side. While our hearts are broken, our grief is softened by the love we all share for Patrick. We celebrate his life which was filled with gratitude, compassion, honesty and humor. He passed on to us a love for all these things as well as dappled sunlight, the Denver Broncos, Led Zeppelin, Coupa mochas and over-sauced pasta. He's the best father, partner, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend we could ever have asked for. His generous spirit will continue to inspire us to begin each day with a generous heart, to live fully and cherish our loved ones.

Patrick's family will host a Celebration of Life for Patrick in Los Altos on June 10th, 2023. Please reach out to the StanClan for more details. For those interested, his favorite charities were the Insight Meditation Center, Dumb Friends League and the World Central Kitchen.
