Obituary of Mary Ann Powell

Born in Porterville, CA. Died after a long illness in Kaiser Hospital, Santa Clara, Ca.

She is survived by her granddaughters Tara Powell of San Jose and Carissa Barker of McAlister, Oklahoma and several nieces and nephews.

To those who knew Mary, she was a strong willed woman, a fighter and most importantly, a friend, who if she was able, was always there for those who needed her.

She was special in her gifts to this country and for her contributions to the early space program, at Lockheed where she received an award for one of her inventions. She used her musical talents in many State orchestras and her Air Force band during the Korean War.

Mary and her housemate Trudy started The Northern California Beagle Rescue Society in 1977 and placed hundreds of dogs into loving homes. These dogs were rescued many times from research labs and other harmful situations. She ran her own beagle breeding and training program and was able to show her dogs, winning trophies in many national dog shows where at times she would judge when not showing. All her trophies she donated to the Abused Women's Group in the Bay Area. Many of the dogs she placed were given to the San Francisco Airport as Agriculture Contraband Dogs.

She accomplished all these things along with being a single mother, no small feat in it's self, but sadly, her son Peter predeceased her at the age of 35. Mary accomplished all this with the burden of the loss of an only child.

She came from Scottish background of which she was very proud and was a member of various Scottish organizations. Mary was a Past Chief Daughter of The Daughters of Scotia.

She will be greatly missed by family and friends who loved her.
