Mary Joan
Maser
April 28, 1942 – March 27, 2026
Mary Joan Kelley Maser died peacefully at home on the 27th of March in the company of family. She was 83.
Joan was born on the 28th of April, 1942 in Baltimore, MD. Her parents, John and Sara Kelley, soon moved to the suburb of Towson, where she was raised together with her younger brothers, John and Michael. She attended Loch Raven Elementary School, and graduated from Towson High School, where she excelled. After attending State Teachers College at Towson, Joan headed West, and in 1964 married Captain Lorin G. Maser who was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, whom she first met at Ocean City, Maryland before he was deployed. They soon moved north to Sunnyvale, then to Los Altos, CA, where she lived for the rest of her life.
The Kelleys were all singers and musicians, and Joan was no exception. She studied piano at the Peabody Conservatory when young, and enjoyed a lifetime of listening—from classical to opera to pop. Her skill at “name that tune” was legendary among family and friends. As she remembered everything she read, and she was always reading, one would not want to challenge her to Jeopardy!
Joan kept an immaculate house, despite the best efforts of her husband, her two children Jeffrey and Nicole, and an endless sequence of dogs and cats. She was Jeff and Niki’s number one fan in the bleachers, and tireless chauffeur to their little league baseball, AYSO, ice skating, basketball, golf, and volleyball games.
In addition to everything else, Joan ran the front office at her husband’s dental practice in Mountain View for almost 30 years. Countless patients received her hand-written birthday and appointment recall cards.
In later years, she traveled widely with both family and friends, enjoying several trips to the UK and Europe, and venturing as far afield as New Zealand. She loved seeing the places she had read so much about, and creating annotated photo albums once home.
Joan is survived by her husband Lorin, her brother Michael Kelley, her son Jeff and his wife Andrea Latham, daughter Nicole, and her granddaughter Delany.
