Hidalgo
February 28, 1920 – November 19, 2024
In loving memory of our mother, Mary A. Hidalgo, who passed away peacefully at home in her sleep on November 19, 2024, at the age of 104 3/4. She was born on February 29, 1920, in Antioch, California, and moved to Sunnyvale at the age of 5.
She is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Gregory Hidalgo, son, Gregory Hidalgo Jr., sister Petra Diaz, brothers Joe Aribas, Frank Aribas, and Eucibio Aribas. Mary is survived by her son, Joseph Hidalgo, daughters Marlene Kanawyer, Gloria Montes, Linda Long, and son-in-law, Danny Pfiester, 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great -great-grandchildren.
Mary accomplished many things in her life from: working in a fish cannery in Monterey, CA, at the age of 13; working at Libby's Cannery in Sunnyvale at the age 16; was a machinist at Westinghouse during WWII while her husband was away fighting in the Philippines; worked as a floor lady at Libby's Cannery while children were growing up; once again became a machinist at a small company; ending her working career as a control manager for Acurex Corporation. Mary held many volunteer positions in the City of Sunnyvale, being on the Senior Advisory Committee, working in the Senior Center Computer Lab, and dozier at the Sunnyvale Heritage Park Museum. Mary also accumulated approximately 9,000 hours volunteering at the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. Mary belonged to many organizations over the years including 78 years with the American Legion Auxiliary, Bayview Senior Citizen Club and Grandmas Club.
Rosary and visitation will be held at Spangler Mortuary, 174 N. Sunnyvale Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Martins Catholic Church, 593 Central Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 12:30 pm; burial will follow at Mission City Memorial Park, 420 N. Winchester Blvd., Santa Clara, CA at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kaiser Hospice, 3900 Freedom Circle, Suite 201, Santa Clara, CA 95054, whose care providers were the most compassionate, gentle individuals while caring for mom.
