Obituary

Mary Ann Varlaro, age 79, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, in Mountain View, CA, her home for more than the last ten years.

Born on May 28, 1946, in Ilion, New York, Mary Ann was the youngest child of Earl DeLuke, Sr. and Josephine DeLuke. She graduated from Frankfort-Schuyler High School in 1964, and immediately began her career, which included early stints at the Ilion Cheese Factory in Ilion, NY, and the Herkimer County Home for the Aged in Middlefield, NY, where she cared for the elderly, which was her true calling. Ultimately, Mary Ann worked at what would eventually become Bank of America in Utica, NY, where she worked as a loan processor for 20 years.

Mary Ann married at the young age of 21, and had her only child, Joseph, in December, 1968. She loved traveling, at least to certain destinations, including Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Cape Cod. She loved Las Vegas for the shopping, shows, and glitz, and San Francisco for her grandkids, Lorenzo and Sofia. Mary Ann relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2015, to enjoy her retirement, and to be closer to her grandkids. She was ever the doting grandmother, and Lorenzo and Sofia were the center of her universe! She was fiercely proud of her grandchildren for everything they accomplished, from learning how to ride bikes, to hitting baseballs, all the way up to graduating from high school.

Mary Ann loved her family and friends so much. She was “always happy for everyone.” The end of her life was challenged by serious health issues, but she continued to live and love. Her New York-bred sarcasm and self-deprecating sense of humor were with her ‘til the end!

Mary Ann is survived by her son, Joseph Varlaro, her grandchildren, Lorenzo Varlaro and Sofia Varlaro, and their mother, May Varlaro, her sister, Donna Rae Kinney, her nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren, and a number of friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Earl, Sr. and Josephine DeLuke, her brother, Earl DeLuke, Jr., her godchild Tiffany Varlaro, and her forever friend, Mary Pedone.

The funeral service will be May 5 at 10:30 AM EST, at Our Lady Queen of Apostles, 412 Frankfort St., Frankfort, NY 13340. Please note there are no other planned services or gatherings.

The family would like to thank the Paradise Care Home in Mountain View, where Mary Ann spent her final six weeks, Endrie (her angel nurse), Dale, and the entire Hospice of the Valley team, along with Spangler Mortuaries, for their extraordinary comfort and care.
