Obituary of Martha Whitmore Hickman

MARTHA WHITMORE HICKMAN Of Los Altos CA, died peacefully Jan. 17 at age 89. Born and raised in Holyoke MA and graduated from Mount Holyoke College. Lived with her family in Pennsylvania and Nashville TN before moving to Los Altos in 2006. Survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Rev. Hoyt Hickman, and by her sons: Peter and wife Teresa Tatto of East Lansing MI, John and wife Lisa Berezin of Arlington MA, and Stephen and wife Karen Garrison of Redwood City CA. Also survived by siblings Mary Cronmiller, Stephen Whitmore, and Esther Craig, and by six grandchildren: Lauren, Emma, Madeline, Sylvia, William and Benjamin. Preceded in death by parents George Whitmore and Ruth Carr Whitmore, and by her daughter Mary. As a freelance author, Martha's best known book is Healing After Loss, a set of meditations for people dealing with grief, which has provided comfort for many thousands of readers throughout the world. Her other writings include fiction, personal essays, and children's books. She was active in many church and community pursuits and had a natural ability to connect with people, developing close friendships throughout her life. She was an expert knitter with a wry sense of humor, and was always handy with a pun or a well-turned phrase. Memorial service to be held at The Terraces at Los Altos, 373 Pine Lane, Los Altos CA at 10 AM on Saturday, Jan. 31. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Martha's memory to Edgehill United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 128258, Nashville, TN 37212.
