In Loving Memory of Marla deBroekert

Marla deBroekert, a dedicated and accomplished woman, passed away recently after suffering a stroke, likely caused by her Alzheimer's. Marla was born in Norway...Kansas. She and her siblings grew up on a farm in North Central Kansas not too far from the Nebraska border. After high school graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, became an Air Force wife, had 2 daughters and lived a fulfilling life. A lot of life happened in between. She divorced her first husband and stayed in California to raise her daughters. She married again in the early 1970's to Jim deBroekert and they were married just shy of 52 years. Jim was blessed with 4 children in his first marriage. Marla and Jim met in church and continued their faith journey with Menlo church as their cornerstone. Mom was raised in the church and died a deep believer of love and salvation in Christ.

Marla was a devoted scholar, earning both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from San Jose State University. Her passion for learning was evident throughout her life.

For decades, she selflessly gave her time and energy to others through her extensive and beloved volunteer work at El Camino Hospital. Marla's warm and caring nature touched the lives of many.

Marla had a few favorite indulgences. She relished in Mac n cheese, savored unsweetened iced tea, and had a sweet spot for pie and ice cream and we can't forget the chardonnay.

Marla was not only known for her creative talents but also for her dry, witty humor. She had the best sense of humor, a quick wit, and could repartee with anyone and likely came out the champion. Her laughter was infectious and she could effortlessly bring smiles to the faces of everyone she encountered.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and family. Marla is survived by her devoted husband, two daughters, four stepchildren, ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, a brother and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

in Marla's honor, as she knew the importance of supporting research to combat this challenging disease.

Marla's talent extended beyond her charitable work. She was known for her prize-winning quilts and found joy in sewing, weaving, and playing the piano. She had a special talent for creating beautiful handmade items. Her creative gifts brought comfort to countless families. Marla was a perfectionist in most things and that included making things for others. For a few years, she spent countless hours crocheting hats and quilting bassinet covers for the littlest ones in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at El Camino Hospital and Stanford. Those small and impactful creations were easy to travel with when spending many hours on planes, ships and ports abroad. She and Jim were avid travelers to all but one continent and here in the states. Her artistic spirit and her wonderful sense of humor will be dearly missed.

Marla deBroekert's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her kindness, generosity, creativity, and her ability to make us laugh have left an indelible mark on the world.

Rest in peace and God's love, dear Marla.
