Obituary of Madeline Johansen

Madeline Johansen, our dearly beloved mother, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2017 in Los Altos. She was 90 years old. She died as she most liked to live, surrounded by the love of her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years, Richard Johansen.

Madeline is survived by and will be sadly missed by her daughter Kaaren Johansen of Morgan Hill and her son Bryan Johansen of Los Altos.

Madeline was born on July 31st, 1927 on a 16 acre apricot ranch in Los Altos Hills, California to John Nunes and Mary Rose. She grew up in a now forgotten rural and agricultural Los Altos Hills. She attended a one room school house at Purissima School before attending Palo Alto High School where she met the love of her life, Richard Johansen. They married in 1946. The couple rented a one room tank house in an apricot orchard in Los Altos, before purchasing their home in Los Altos in 1952. They raised their family in their beautiful home and lived there for 65 years. They built a beautiful cabin in Lake Tahoe in 1959 and spent family vacations there year round.

As a lifetime resident of Los Altos Madeline was witness to 90 years of local history. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, fishing and traveling. She volunteered at the St. Williams Church rummage sale every year. She was known for her love and generosity, her old fashioned values and ethics and was loved and cherished by all who new her. Above all, she was dedicated to her family. Her most lasting legacy is the example she set as a loving and devoted wife and mother.

On Saturday August 12th a mass was held at The All Saints Chapel at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Los Altos followed by a private graveside ceremony.
