Obituary

Kathryn H. Armstrong died peacefully in Palo Alto, California on September 20, 2023, at the age of 93. She was born on September 4 th , 1930, in Washington, D.C. and resided in California most of her adult life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years Lt. Col. (Ret.) John L. Armstrong, her parents Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Milton B. Halsey and Kathryne H. Halsey, and her brother Col. (Ret.) Milton B. Halsey, Jr. (spouse: Sandy). Kathy was the matriarch of a large loving family and is survived by her 4 children John (Polly), Lee Anne, Mark (Brenda), and Jim (Rachel), her 10 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

In her early years, Kathy lived in many states and countries as an Army daughter and Army wife including the Territory of Hawaii, Japan, Virginia, Kansas, Texas, Maryland, South Dakota, Nebraska, and France. She was the first American high school graduate in Japan following World War II and later a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Virginia where she was selected as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society.

Kathy was a gentle soul who was cultured and dignified and embraced her role as a homemaker, wife, and mother. She was sophisticated and well-rounded in education, travel, and experiences. She was a meticulous hostess, a generous conversationalist, and during her years overseas she took pride in being a good ambassador for her country.

Kathy worked as an executive assistant and loved helping others in her family, community, and church. She was a woman of deep faith, a regular at Bible study groups, the mother of three Eagle Scouts, and a tireless community volunteer at her children's schools and various charitable organizations. Her compassionate spirit, positive outlook on life, and loving nature were inspirational to all.
