Obituary of Julian Terry
Julian Terry passed away on July 8th after a valiant battle with cancer. His wife Naka was by his side as he passed peacefully on to the place where they would meet again one day. Julian was born on October 6, 1965. He was brought up in the South-East of England in the county of Kent, an area known in the UK as the 'Garden of England'. As a little boy he was quiet and would amuse himself happily, quite often pulling things apart to see how they worked! He loved the countryside, nature, pets and farm animals " cows and sheep in particular. He enjoyed hunting for bugs and insects and as a teenager he became a bee-keeper. He enjoyed being with his family and developed a liking for farming from having many family vacations on a farm on the stunning North Wales coast. From a relatively early age, and for many years after, he could often be found in the cowsheds, helping the farmer with milking and cleaning chores, often in his bedroom slippers! At the age of thirteen he started a regular Saturday job, helping at a farm local to where we lived. He went in all weathers and hardly ever missed a day all while he was at senior school, until he left home to go to university. At senior school Julian's obvious ability in mathematics and the sciences gave him great success on his A-Levels. As a hobby he built and programmed several early home microcomputers, such as the Sinclair ZX81. This was where his interest in computers was fired and early skills honed into what was to become his livelihood in later life. Julian worked at DIP after University managing Hardware Engineering. When DIP's new office in California couldn't entice him with money to move to San Jose, they decided to entice him with love. He was casually, and strategically, introduced to Naka at a dinner party while on a business trip in Los Angeles. He moved to San Jose a year later and in 2000 they were married. They have two children, Taiju and Caroline. Julian was a dedicated and loving husband and father. Julian continued managing and directing engineering at DIP and Phoenix, and then co-founded Drobo in 2005. He was a hardworking, creative, honest co-worker and friend. He was patently highly intelligent, hardworking in the extreme at any task that interested him, deeply loyal to family and friends, gentle in his manner and general approach to life, and uncomplaining and stoical in adversity. He had an off-beat and quirky sense of humor. He will be remembered by many and missed by all.
