Obituary of John F. Weigen

Radiologist, author, associate professor, activist, philanthropist, wood carver, gardener, and golfer. Devoted husband and father. John died at his home of natural causes, surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 95 on October 20th, 2016.

Along with his wife Patricia of 55 years, he was devoted to enriching the lives of the developmentally disabled and the disadvantaged.

Kind, humble, and loyal with a keen sense of humor, John
left this world a markedly better place by improving the lives of others in so many ways. We will miss his guidance, strong principles, and gentle spirit. He was adored by his wife Patricia, daughters Nancy, Chris, and Liz, his sister Carol and her family, granddaughters Libby and Hanna, and his dog Pip.

Born and raised in Chicago to Norwegian parents, he attended Carleton College and Northwestern Medical School. John met his future wife Patricia on a blind date in 1944. They made their home in Los Altos for the next 61 years. John worked as a radiologist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation for 34 years. He helped PAMF become a nationally recognized institution with the early adoption of mammography for early cancer detection.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John's name can be made to Abilities United (an organization in Palo Alto that enriches the lives of the developmentally disabled) or the Special Olympics. A memorial is being planned.
