Obituary

John Rupert Vreugde passed into eternal life at Good Samaritan Hospital, San Jose, California on July 17,
2022, while holding hands with his beloved life partner, Kim-Chi Nguyễn and his favorite sister, Mary
Vreugde McCracken. John was born December 30, 1959 in Redwood City, California to Ludwig "Dutch"
Rupert Vreugde and Nancy Bibb Ring Vreugde. John and his family lived in Sunnyvale, California until
1967, until his little brother Bill arrived, requiring the family to move into bigger digs in Saratoga,
California.

John attended Lynbrook High School, San Jose in the footsteps of his older brother, Bob and favorite
sister Mary, graduating with honors as one of the most fun and adventurous guys in his entire school.
John went on to attend college and graduated from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado in
1985 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. In December, 1991 John was elected a Member of the
American Institute of Chemical Engineers. John worked for a number of companies, most recently in the
circuit board industry as a senior process engineer.

John lived full-hearted as a sweet and loving man. He gave generously and kindly to all around him. John
loved a good practical joke and loved laughing and playing with family and friends. John was an avid
golfer and enjoyed playing and watching baseball and football. John was known to hop trains in college
with a buddy, and travel the rails for the adventurous fun it brought. John was a bird watcher, loved his
dog DP (Double Play), and raised his horse "Whiskey" from a newborn foal to the end of Whiskey's life.
A gifted gardener, John was always growing plants, especially delighting in the flowering of his
bougainvillea. John was also a wonderful cook, with his specialties of homemade long-simmering
spaghetti sauce and German chocolate cake. John traveled extensively through the US, living in all the
states that start with a "C" and took two overseas trips, one to the Netherlands with Dutch, Bob and Bill
to visit Dutch's childhood home.

John found peace in the outdoors, in particular at the beaches of Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, and in
the Santa Cruz mountains in Boulder Creek, California. In his earlier years, John kept a sailboat at Dana
Point, California which he would take out into the mighty Pacific Ocean. John had a particular love of
Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, which he shared as a young boy with his family and later with Kim.
John and Kim met in 2007 and fell in love in 2010 and became life partners. They built their life together
in the Bay Area, where John felt most at home. Their union was a blend of cultures, of life experiences,
with sweet memories of lunch at Davenport, visiting Pigeon Lighthouse, shopping in Pescadero,
mountain drives, laughing and taking tender care of each other. John was a kind and loving friend to
Kim's four children, playing sports, giving advice and listening to their hopes and dreams.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Dutch and Nancy Vreugde. He is survived by his beloved life
partner, Kim-Chi Nguyễn, and her four children, in particular her daughter Christine, his brother Robert
"Bob" (Amy) Hendrik Vreugde and their five children of Houston, Texas, his favorite sister Mary Lillian
Vreugde McCracken and her seven children in the Pacific Northwest, and his brother William "Bill" Ring
Vreugde of Houston, Texas.

Words cannot express how greatly John will be missed. We are broken-hearted yet grateful for the
wonderful care John received at Good Samaritan's Cardiovascular ICU, in particular, nurses Monique,
Nicole, Martha, Jessica, Fio, Johnny and Keith, Chaplain Pastor Cindy, and Dr. Murthy.

John's viewing and memorial service will be held Monday, July 25, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Spangler
Mortuary, 799 Castro Street, Mountain View, California. The witness of cremation will follow at
Spangler's Sunnyvale location, 174 N Sunnyvale Ave, Sunnyvale, California. In lieu of flowers, the family
requests that you send a donation to your favorite charity in John's name.
