Obituary

John Bartley Miaullis, known to everyone as Bart, passed away peacefully on the evening of April 24, 2026 in his home, surrounded by family.

Bart was born to Basil and Eleanore Miaullis in Seattle, Washington on January 20, 1942. He was named after his maternal grandfather, John Bartley Wadlington and he had warm and loving relationships with all four of his grandparents. Four years later his sister Melody was born, followed by his brother George. While growing up in Bellingham, Washington, he loved riding his bike and making model airplanes.

The family moved to Great Falls, Montana when he was 15, and then to Boise, Idaho a year later. He was part of the Borah High School Class of 1960, only the second graduating class.

Bart attended Boise Junior College until 1962, and then transferred to Oregon State University graduating in 1965. After graduation he spent the summer working at a Salmon canning plant in Alaska. He returned to Corvallis in August to marry Laura McWilliams, whom he met at OSU. Bart earned his Master's in Biochemistry at OSU and found his niche working with the Oregon Department of Agricultural Chemistry analyzing pesticides in the agricultural system. Once he got the hang of how the analysis worked, he realized "Wow! This is where I want to be!"

In 1968, Bart and Laura bought his trademark tan VW Bug and moved to Mountain View, California where he started his job at Stauffer Biochemical Company. Their first child, Aaron, was born in 1969. They adopted Angela in 1971, who tragically passed away when she was three. They welcomed their daughter, Kathy, into the family in 1975. Bart and Laura moved to Los Altos in 1980 and divorced in 1984.

Bart worked at Stauffer for 25 years testing various chemical pesticides. He continued to work as a biochemist for ICI, Syntex, and AstraZeneca. He retired from Roche in 2007, where he served as the only chemist on their human resources team, mentoring young scientists.

Bart married Patricia Campbell in 1989. Bart and Pat loved travelling all over the world. They walked the famous Camino de Santiago over a two-year period, starting in the summer of 2007. They also visited Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, France, England, Ireland, Rome, Norway, Russia and the Holy Land to name a few places.

Everyone who knew Bart knew that he had a zest for life and a passion for helping people. He was an independent living skills coach for PARCA (an organization that assists individuals with developmental disabilities) from 2003 until his death. He was friendly with everyone he met and took joy in helping whenever he saw a need. It could be said that he never met a stranger.

Bart was a faithful member of St William Catholic Church in Los Altos for over 40 years, serving as an usher and money counter. He also volunteered at Stanford Hospital as a Eucharistic minister for many years, praying with the sick and dying in their time of need.

In 2017, Bart began treatment for Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, a rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The treatment was very successful and he remained healthy for many years. He and Pat became part of the Waldenstrom’s community, attending many IWMF (International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation) meetings to get support and stay informed on discoveries and advances in treatment.

After COVID-19 began, Bart and Pat made Bend, Oregon their second home, staying for long periods at his late brother George's home.

Bart was very active and rode his bike everywhere and played tennis weekly as long as his health allowed.

He was always thrilled by music, especially classical music and jazz. He volunteered with local jazz station KCSM for many years. He played the trumpet in elementary school and continued to play in the orchestra in high school. He always enjoyed a good symphony or opera and would often send video clips to family and friends of impressive orchestra or piano performances.

Even when he was diagnosed with B-Cell Lymphoma in 2023, Bart could only be described as the eternal optimist. When others would have long since given up the fight, he always held out hope. Even from his hospital bed, it was not uncommon for him to say “Well, that was a pretty good day!”

He was fascinated by advances in scientific medicine, and would have gladly given his body to science, evidenced by his willing participation in a CART-T clinical trial in 2024.

Despite repeated treatments, in mid-April it became clear that the cancer had spread. Bart peacefully passed away a week later, in the presence of family who loved him dearly. He was always in a cheery mood right up to the end, and able to make others laugh.

Bart is survived by his wife Patricia, his sister Melody, his children, Aaron and Kathy, his stepchildren, Anne, Johnny and Megan, and his eleven grandchildren, Lottie, Margaret, Nicholas, Caitlin, Mary Helen, Karis, Emily, Helena, Hansel, Max, and Tirza.
