Obituary of John Francis Hannigan
John Francis Hannigan passed into the loving arms of God on November 3, 2016 in Palo Alto, CA, three days short of his 75th birthday. John was born in Kansas City, Missouri, to John and Madonna Yeaman Hannigan on November 6, 1941. He graduated from Rockhurst University in 1962 and received a Master's Degree in Mathematics from Florida State University. He went on to do his doctoral work in Statistics at Stanford University. He was a founding faculty member in the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Riverside. John served as the Director of Statistics for the Northern California Cancer Center for many years. He then moved to Xoma and Gilead Sciences before becoming a consulting biostatistician in 1995. John lived on the San Francisco peninsula for fifty years and had recently relocated to Brentwood, CA.
John is survived by the love of his life, Anne Hannigan, his loving daughter Lauren Hannigan Lonaker (husband Chris) and two wonderful grandchildren, Lily and William Lonaker. He is also survived by his sister, Colleen Herman (husband Joe) and his nieces and nephews: John Herman, Madonna Herman Graham, Katy Mulbery, Joey Herman, Jeremy Herman, Truman and Eliana Mulbery and Warren and Cormac Graham.
John loved life and felt blessed in every way. He enjoyed many long friendships and kept in touch with people from all the stages of his life. He was a long-time member of the Catholic Alumni Club, belonged to a book club for nearly 40 years, and a men's scripture group at the Stanford Catholic Community for over a decade. He loved travel, sports, politics, good wine and all things Irish.
A celebration of John's life will be held at St. Nicholas Church, 473 Lincoln Avenue, Los Altos, CA on November 12, 2016 at 11:30 am. A reception will follow.
