Obituary of Joan Anne Hughes

Joan Anne Hughes passed away on Monday, August 13, 2012 at the age of 70. Joan was born November 19, 1941 to parents Gilbert and Anna Sandvoss, as were her five siblings. She was raised in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, N.Y., and was graduated from Bushwick High School. Later living in East Islip (Long Island), N.Y. and Naperville, Ill., Joan continued her education by earning degrees in nursing from the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill. and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill. She then pursued a career in providing nursing care, both with a hospital environment and through home health care. Having subsequently moved to Saratoga, Calif., and later to San Jose, Calif., Joan was loved by her family as well as many others concerned with her welfare. She is survived by her son Lawrence F. Hughes of Flushing (Queens), N.Y.; daughter Karen Anderson and granddaughters Alexandria Anderson and Charlotte Anderson, all of New Braunfels, Tex.; and sisters Winifred DeGennaro of York, Penna. and Virginia Samson of Sandpoint, Id. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Lillian Quinn Bertoni and Ruth Brown, and brother Gilbert Sandvoss. Friends of Joan and her family will be received on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, and Thursday, December 13, 2012, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. each day, at the home of her son, Lawrence F. Hughes, 42-65 Kissena Boulevard, Flushing (Queens), N.Y. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 14, 2012, at 10:00 A.M., at Glendale Maspeth United Methodist Church, 66-14 Central Avenue, Glendale (Queens), N.Y.
