Obituary of Helen 'Mae' Matsuba

Helen 'Mae' was born in Sacramento on November 23, 1921. She was the loving wife of George; mother of Diane (Alfred) Nishiura and Bob (Linda) Matsuba; grandmother of Lisa, Ryan and Erin, sister of Dorothy (Tosh) Matsui, George (Jane) Chikuma, Alice (Shig) Fujii, George (Jane) Chikuma, Ted Chikuma, Allen Chikuma, and Karen (Steve) Martinez. She initially worked as a nurse's assistant, raised Diane and Bob, then returned to work as a housekeeper. In her retirement years she enjoyed babysitting her grandkids Lisa, Ryan and Erin. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, growing orchids, as well as reading books and doing crossword puzzles. She suffered a stroke in 2008, severely limiting her mobility, then eventually her memory and speech. She received 24/7 in-home care by George, Diane, Alfred, Lisa and Mike. In her final month, she also received in-house care from Pathways Hospice. She passed away peacefully at home with her family at her bedside on September 30, 2013. A private family service was held at Spangler Mortuary in Mountain View on October 3, 2013.
