Guy Vincent
Ferry
November 9, 1932 – November 9, 2023
Guy Ferry always strove to be on time, not early and not late, so it is just like him to pass away on the same day he was born.
Guy was youngest of six brothers and one sister born to George Victor Ferry, Sr. and Natalie Agnes Ferry (née Hays) of Oxford, Nebraska. Although he was born on his father's birthday, there was already a George Victor, Jr. Guy was therefore given a name that included his father's initials. The family had their own pew at St. Michael's in Oxford and as a young lad, Guy was fascinated by the statue of St. Michael, Archangel vanquishing the serpent with his sword.
As a young man, Guy had a stammer and was immensely grateful to the teacher who worked with him and taught him techniques to overcome the stammer. This later led to his active involvement and appreciation for Toastmasters. During his sixty years in Toastmasters, he served as a District Four Governor (1972-1973) under his time in office the District achieved Presidents Distinguished District and on the Board of Directors from 1974 to 1976. He was recognized with the Toastmasters International Presidential Citation in 1976, the highest award for service to Toastmasters. He has been designated a Distinguished Toastmaster.
Guy served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956 and was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant having served as an Engineer and received a National Service Defense Medal.
As a Chemist, he did his undergraduate work at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and his graduate work at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
In his thirty-seven years at NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA, Guy published over 100 peer reviewed papers in Science Journals. He has had several research projects flown into space. Guy spent his last fifteen years with NASA's Airborne Science Program studying, weather and climate, including the Ozone Hole and Global Climate Change. He traveled far and wide during these projects, with Elaine and Deborah sometimes joining him after the projects were concluded. His retirement was timed for the end of December 1999 so he could say he had a Y2K problem!
Football was definitely a passion for this Nebraska farm boy. He was always a supporter of his local team wherever he lived. Right after college he took a job in San Diego working at Convair. It is a fact that he purchased season tickets for the San Diego Chargers before looking for a place to live.
In 1963, Guy met Elaine Placencia, who would become the love of his life. As luck would have it, Elaine's nursing schedule allowed her to attend the 49er games at Kezar Stadium with him where they witnessed, first hand, the famous "W rong Way Run " by Jim Marshall! After a few years of courting and 49ers, they married on 30 April 1966 in Palo Alto, CA. A year later, on their first anniversary, they welcomed their beloved daughter to their family. During their 57 years of marriage, they celebrated life and love daily.
As active parishioners at St. Lawrence the Martyr, Guy and his family have been involved in many parish committees. Guy was a Proclaimer and Lector Coordinator for over 40 years.
Before and after retirement, Guy continued supporting his many organizations. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, served as Grand Knight, and as Color Corps Commander for many years. He was a member of Serra Club.
A stroke temporarily slowed Guy down in 2004. Parkinson's disease and vascular dementia had a greater affect in the last few years.
Guy is survived by his wife, Elaine, and daughter, Deborah. He was much loved by his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Natalie Ferry and five brothers, George Jr., Francis, Edward, Robert, and James and one sister, Marie.
Special Thanks to our Caregivers over the past several years: Mele, Laura, Karla, Elma, Lorma, Sahle, Hector, Dora, and Papy. Even our hair stylist, Ngoc, would come to the house because we were too nervous to trim Guy's nails. Visiting Angels and Hospice of the Valley were wonderful in all their guidance. We are so grateful for everyone that has supported us throughout this journey.
Guy was known for his sense of humor and respected by those who knew him. He leaves a hole in our community and in the hearts of all those who loved him.
Guy, you will be missed!
