Obituary of Gregory Mark Duke


Gregory Mark Duke was born in Dallas, Texas onApril 2, 1953 to Will and Louise Duke. He marriedJoan Brumleve on December 17, 1976 in Bellingham,Washington. He was a faithful husband and dedicatedfather to his daughter and two sons. Greg was a manof extraordinary intellect who was "one of the mostversatile molecular virologists of his generation."



Following his postdoctoral research fellowship atStanford's Department of Microbiology andImmunology, Greg began his career at Aviron as aScientist III. He would ultimately rise to become theSenior Director of Research for 3v-Biosciences. Hewas a man whose pride was extraordinary whenworking with viruses and infectious diseases. Some ofhis most notable accomplishments were being instrumental in engineering and producing liveattenuated CMV vaccine candidates. Greg also dedicated much of his time to see FluMist become an effective vaccine. Greg would frequently tell his family that he wished he was back in the fight against viruses and infectious diseases.



Outside of work, Greg was a man who cared deeply about his family and schools. He enjoyed hikes, bike rides, and dog walks with his family. He was a fierce supporter of the Wisconsin Badgers, Stanford Cardinal, Duke Blue Devils, San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants, and Golden State Warriors. When he wasn't cheering on his favorite teams, he would work around the house and garden. His ability to envision and accomplish what he set out to do was unparalleled.



Greg frequently told his family that he hoped that he brought goodness to the world. This hope was not only accomplished in his career but also in his faith. Greg participated in a Day Laborer Ministry at his church. Greg was an enthusiastic advocate for helping those who were less fortunate and worked with his faith to better the lives of those individuals. His participation in the congregation will be missed.



Greg enjoyed traveling the world with his wife Joan, fixing things around the house, and reading. He most enjoyed entertaining and hearing his family's adventures at work and school.



Greg is survived by his wife, Joan Brumleve; father, Will Duke; mother, Louise Duke; brother, Kerry Duke; sister, Denise Duke-Driscoll; daughter, Lesly Duke; sons Marco and Juan Duke; dog, Misty; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
