Gordon Joseph
Vosti
September 10, 1929 – September 4, 2023
Dr. Gordon Joseph Vosti age 93 died September 4, 2023 in Redwood City, California.
His aortic valve just wore out.
Gordon was born on September 10, 1929 to Lois and Henry Vosti of Salida, California.
Gordon was the youngest of three brothers born within a year of each other. He is predeceased by his brothers, Donald and Kenneth. The three boys created many memories growing up on the ranch in Salida, before eventually moving into "town" (Modesto).
Gordon attended Modesto High school and was always proud of his participation as a clarinetist in the marching band under the direction of Frank Mancini, "Modesto's music man".
Gordon attended Modesto Junior College (the first ever California community college district) and then went on to spend one year at Cal Berkeley before transferring to Stanford and graduating from the medical school in 1954 with his brother Kenneth.
He met Marcia Jean Williams in Glacier Park Montana one summer while he was in medical school. He drove the Red Bus and she was a waitress at the Many Glacier Hotel. They were married December 18, 1954.
He spent one year of residency in Minneapolis, studying under John Coe, the Hennepin County coroner. He was called to military duty and served in the US Army as a physician in La Rochelle, France before returning to California to finish his residency in Internal Medicine. He told the story that they wanted him to be on a traveling tennis team, instead of practicing medicine in the Army, but he felt that would be frivolous.
The San Jose Medical Group was established in 1955 and Gordon was one of the first physicians to join. He was a dedicated doctor, loved by his patients, staff, and colleagues. He had a wonderful bedside manner and was an excellent diagnostician.
Gordon was always a rancher at heart. He loved working in the yard. While his children were young he built a chicken coop, a rabbit hutch, a salt water aquarium and tended to the fruit trees. In his later years he became a master gardener.
He loved the outdoors and hiked the Sierras with friends and family, always bringing along his guitar to lead songs around the campfire.
He forged friendships by spending time in the wilderness backpacking and fishing. He made hiking trips part of family life. He loved telling stories about interesting people and making connections with others. He made everyone feel welcome.
What was amazing about Gordon was his ever positive attitude and amazing spirit to "carry on." He lost most of his vision to macular degeneration but continued to read the paper with his magnifying glass and attend painting classes with Marcia. He fished with friends who would graciously drive him to the Klamath River. You would think he would struggle but his casts were spot on. He had an early diagnosis of lung cancer in which he lost part of his lung, right after having back surgery for his spinal stenosis. When his memory faded he still would ask, "So what are you doing with your life these days?" And up until his last days he still really loved to sing.
He will be deeply missed but forever in the hearts of his wife of almost 69 years, Marcia, his children Ann (Lloyd Leanse), David (Eileen), and Hugh, and his grandchildren Eric and Michael Rogers. The family wishes to thank Oakmont of Redwood City for their care of Gordon in his last years of life, as well as Pathways Hospice and Arnel Roca, his caregiver. Memorial service to be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations to Yosemite Conservancy (yosemite.org).
