Obituary of Dorothy Ellen Berry

Dorothy Ellen Berry went peacefully to God on Thursday, January 22nd at home after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born to the late Phebe Ann Cummings Rohan and Peter Campion Rohan in Poughkeepsie, New York, on October 28, 1928, the feast day of St. Jude. She was one of 11 children, born in Duchess County New York, raised on the Cream Street Dairy Farm in Hyde Park. Dorothy leaves behind her sisters; Mary Patricia Boland of Buffalo, NY., Shirley Rome of Stamford Ct., Phebe Carver of Shrewsbury NJ, Sheila (Chris) Jameson of Dallas, Texas, Dolores Lobowski of Westchester, Pa., her brother Franklin Rohan and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brothers; Richard, John and Peter Rohan, and her sister Evelyn Johnson. Dorothy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, affectionately known by her nickname "Mhuti". She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Robert Emanuel, her son, Robert Emanuel Jr., her daughter-in-law, Sandra Pollano Berry, her grandchildren: Renee Francesca (Matthew Boitano), Robert Leo, Andrea Eleanor, Valentina Elise, and great-grandson, Jude Matthew Boitano. She and her husband, Bob, lived in London, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania before moving to California in 1961. She is a graduate of Georgian Court College, New Jersey, where she majored in Home Economics. She was then employed by the New Jersey Power company teaching families how to cook with "Electric Kitchen Appliances". Dorothy was introduced to her loving husband, Bob, by his mother, where they had a chance meeting on a Ridgefield NJ bus. She taught Home Economics at Cubberly High School in P.A. for many years. She completed her Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling from Drexel University at Stanford University, Palo Alto and had a thriving private practice in So. Ca., and the Bay Area for over 45 years. Dorothy was a frequent contributor to the Ladies Home Journal Magazine, series "Can This Marriage Be Saved". Dorothy Ellen Agnes Rohan (DEAR) Berry was a two time cancer survivor, a strong, devoted, kind, generous, independent, determined woman. She will be missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to "Imaculate Heart Monastery", 28210 Natoma Road, Los Altos Hills, CA 94022. Services will be held at St. Williams Catholic Church, 611 S. El Monte Ave., Los Altos. The Rosary will be held on Wednesday, January 28th, at 7:00 P.M., Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 29th at 10:00 A.M., followed by a private burial at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery.
