Obituary of Daniel Timothy Shum
Dan was born in Reno Nevada during the great depression, having six siblings - five sisters and one brother. All raised by a single mother May Moy as Dan's father Timothy Shum had passed by the time he was nine. During his early life the family was poor but a strong work ethic, instilled early in life, helped Dan and all his siblings to succeed " one could say that the Shum family has lived the true American dream as first generation immigrants. Dan went on to work as a power supply engineer for many prestigious Silicon Valley companies throughout his career Teledyne, Tandem, Astec Boschert, Compaq and final employment Network Appliance. As an engineer he loved technology and computers. We were likely the first to have a home computer bought from Radio Shack a TRS-80 or affectionately called "trash 80". Every time there was a new computer out you bet we had it. He worked on power supply electronics until retiring at 76. After graduating from Berkeley High in 1949, he went on to work for the San Francisco Naval Air Station as a Radio technician after which he decided to go back to school to study engineering. In 1959 he met his first wife Susan. On December 10th 1960 his first daughter Theresa was born. His second child Melvin was born March 12th 1963. After this marriage ended Dan would go on to marry Lilly Joe with whom he would spend the next 45 years of his life. They married in 1970 and adopted two children Michael born May 5th 1973 and Angela born November 11th 1975. Daniel was physically active throughout his life. He loved exercising, dancing and singing. He sang with the Sunnyvale Singers from 1982 until 2002. He loved ballroom dancing and participated in competition. He also enjoyed traveling, camping and long vacations. Dan loved playing his harmonica and always had a fast 2-wheeler. Even at 84 years old dad still rode his electric bike. After fighting a 5 year battle with lung cancer our father passed the morning of Sunday July 26 peacefully in his sleep. He was a kind, happy, generous, honest, dedicated, loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife Lilly of 45 years, sons Melvin and Michael, daughters Theresa and Angela daughter-in-law Jennifer, son-in-law Corey, grandchildren Alyssa, Samantha, Nicolas, Christopher, Thomas, Jasmine, Layla and Ona. We love you dad! Funeral services will be held at the Spangler Mortuary in Sunnyvale on August 8th at 11:00 a.m. Daniel will be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.
