Carolyn Shields Rowland (May 7, 1925--April 2, 2020)
Carolyn Shields Rowland, 94, of Bakersfield, CA, and long-time resident of Los Altos, passed away on April 2, 2020 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's. Her love and caring for others affected all those around her in a positive way, especially through her love of Jesus and her skills in voice and art. Carol's favorite Bible verse was Proverbs 3:5-6. She accepted Jesus as her Savior on July 25, 1954.
Carol graduated from the University of Utah with a BA in education and a minor in music. She loved children and taught Kindergarten for 30 years. She used her creative skills in many ways, not only with her family but also with people of all ages. Carol used her musical talents to sing in various choirs, sing solos for her church, and to teach private vocal lessons. Her artistic talents were expressed in the many paintings for home and family, plus creating a backdrop for the baptistery for her Sunnyvale Church family. She also voluntarily gave art classes at her church. Additionally, Carol served over 20 years as a Chaplain's Aide at El Camino Hospital. Gardening was another love; her yard became a template filled with many colorful flowers. Many others will also remember the fun videos she and her husband created of their many travels abroad.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Edwin Rowland. Carol is survived by children, Kathleen Kalvesmaki (Ken), James Rowland (Jo Anne), and Patricia Pearson (Scott); grandchildren, Cedric Kalvesmaki, Laurel Kalvesmaki, Joel Kalvesmaki, Andrea Kalvesmaki, Henry Kalvesmaki, Zina Pittman, Philip Rowland, Jennifer Huang, and James Pearson Hughes, and eleven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted for immediate family. A memorial Service will be held at a later date. Those wishing to donate may give to the El Camino Hospital Chaplaincy (https://www.elcaminohealth.org/give-back/volunteer/spiritual-care) or Menlo.Church.
