Obituary of Andrew Hansotia Myers

Andrew H. Myers

1966 to 2017

Andrew Hansotia Myers of Los Altos Hills, the recipient of a White House lifetime achievement award for service to the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital, died of a heart attack August 18 at his home. He was 51.

In addition to his hospital service, Andrew had worked in various capacities for several businesses in Mountain View, Santa Clara and San Jose. He graduated from Awalt High School in Mountain View in 1984, and he earned degrees in history from Foothill College and accounting from West Valley College. He lived in Sunnyvale and Mountain View as well as Los Altos Hills.

Andrew was born in London, England with a number of handicaps that made life challenging in social and working contexts. Diagnosed eventually as "autism," these maladies included vision, speech and dexterity. Nevertheless, he persevered and became noted for being always courteous, gentle and helpful. He traveled widely in America, Europe and India, was extremely well-read, solved advanced logic puzzles and enjoyed the close love of his family and friends.

At the Veterans Administration Hospital, Andrew was known for his willingness do any work at any time and volunteered to work holidays so others could be at home. His activities focused on logistics and patient services. He arrived early and left late, accumulating many thousands of hours of service.

In 2016, the Office of President Obama and the Corporation for National and Community Service presented him the Lifetime Achievement Award for commitment to building a stronger nation through volunteer service.

Andrew is survived by his parents, Myron and Nina Myers of Los Altos Hills; a sister and brother-in-law, Tinaz and Chris Sheerer, and their sons, Zachary and Derek Sheerer, of Sunnyvale; and by a brother and sister-in-law, Myron Myers III and Tina Nguyen of Spring, Texas.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Fisher House Palo Alto for families visiting hospitalized veterans.

A Memorial Service will be held at11 a.m.Saturday, August 26, in the Los Altos Chapel of Spangler's Mortuary, followed by a reception at the family home.
